Monett Photography 1 25 February 2019 Homelessness As the number of homeless people has risen, homelessness has become a key issue in America especially in metropolitan areas. Through the change of seasons, homeless becomes more dangerous and when the temperature drops, living on the streets becomes deadly. Photographs capture the sad reality that homeless people have to live through every day. For the most part, the average person believes that homelessness is the product of poor life choices and or a bad work ethic. Homelessness is mainly connected to poverty, a lack of affordable housing as well as emotional and health related problems. Even though many cities have implemented programs to deal with this issue, they're dealing with the use of public spaces that homeless people are using rather than trying to deal with the problem at the source. Although programs provide transitional shelters and temporary housing, they don't offer permanent housing. Another issue os a lack of employment 30% of homeless adults report losing a job or having their hours cut as a reason for losing housing, and 38 percent of homeless adults report a lack of job or income as a main barrier to obtaining housing. Almost two-thirds of homeless adults are unemployed. The median length of time people have been unemployed is 23 months, which is has been consistent since 2012. Due to this researchers suggest that there should be an increase in affordable permanent housing using federal funds. Personally I believe that there should be more effort given to providing the less fortunate with more aid in helping them find jobs and permanent housing. Living in Minnesota makes it hard to survive on the streets when temperatures drop to less than -40 degrees at some times. The programs put in place to get these people on their feet are not sufficient and personally I believe that there needs to be more attention given to this issue.
